Kyra wasnât ready go there with Charlie. Heâd been too much like a big brother for her to believe he could turn on her family. There was no amount of money that would entice him. Period.
âFamily can be a real blind spot,â Ian said, and his words were the equivalent of a hammer being slammed into her head.
âPromise me youâll look at the problem from all angles,â Grayson said quietly.
She took a few seconds to breathe before giving a slight nod. Despite not believing Charlie would ever do anything to hurt her personally, he could possibly be tricked into doing it without realizing what was happening. Mistakes were made. The wrong people were trusted sometimes. âIâll keep my eyes wide open no matter who Iâm around.â
âThatâs all Iâm asking,â Grayson said.
âWhy do I think this conversation is no longer about our family?â Ian asked. He deserved to know, so Grayson provided the short version.
âAs much as I canât fathom my own cousin betraying us, after hearing about your family Iâd be naïve to close my eyes to the possibility,â Kyra said. âI would like, however, it to be noted that I donât believe Charlie is knowingly involved in hurting my family. Anyone can be tricked.â
âDuly noted,â Grayson agreed. He also realized that his cousins might have had nothing to do with their motherâs crimes. But then, any one of them could have reached out by now. None had. He turned to Ian. âWhy do you think the other side has been so quiet?â
âConsidering our mother would never do something so evil, itâs impossible for me to understand what our cousins might be going through in all this,â he said. âWe know Kellan has been in a feud with Corbin over Liv, so itâs no surprise he hasnât made contact.â
âNot to mention him and Adam are like gasoline on fire,â Grayson pointed out.
Ian nodded. He picked up a Coke and set it down before taking a sip.
âDid you ever get the rest you needed?â Ian asked.
Grayson shook his head. âI got a second wind when the food came.â
âWhy donât you grab some shuteye then? Youâll rest better on a full stomach,â Ian suggested.
âI might conk out for a little while too,â Kyra said, stretching her arms and yawning. âMind if I stay over here?â
Her question, directed at Grayson, elicited a look from Ian. This wasnât the time to discuss the fact he was only consoling a woman whoâd been scared out of her gourd. She was seeking comfort and that was all. Any decent person could be substituted in Graysonâs place. A little voice in the back of his head picked that moment to point out how much his own comment stung. Was it so wrong he wanted to be differentâspecial?âin the princessâs eyes?
Different time. Different place. This whole scenario might go down in a different way.
âBe my guest,â Grayson said to Kyra. âThe bedâs big enough for two.â Grayson immediately acknowledged that was about the lamest thing he could have said right now.
